France Launches USD80M Emergency Plan Amid Middle East Oil Shock
The targeted plan — covering the transport, farming, and fishing sectors — comes as disruption to the Strait of Hormuz continues to drive global oil prices sharply higher, squeezing businesses dependent on fuel-intensive operations.
Authorities framed the intervention as essential to defending France's "food sovereignty" and maintaining the uninterrupted functioning of the national economy.
The largest share of the package — €50 million — is directed at small and medium-sized road transport companies, delivered as a flat-rate subsidy of €0.20 per liter. Farmers will benefit from a full exemption on agricultural diesel taxes for the month, while the fishing industry has been allocated €5 million to offset soaring fuel costs, which now represent 35% of operators' total expenses.
Beyond sector-specific grants, the government said it would provide a "financial cushion" to distressed businesses through deferred social security and tax payments — penalty-free — as well as "Boost Fuels" loans of up to €50,000 for the smallest enterprises.
All measures are capped at the month of April 2026. The relief effort comes after nearly four weeks of US and Israeli air strikes against Iran — a campaign that has killed more than 1,340 people, including then-Supreme Leader Ali Khamenei. Tehran has responded with sustained drone and missile attacks on Israel, Jordan, Iraq, and Gulf states hosting American military assets, triggering casualties, infrastructure damage, and widespread disruption to global supply chains and aviation networks.
The Strait of Hormuz, through which approximately 20 million barrels of oil flow each day, has been effectively paralyzed since early March — sending shipping costs and energy prices surging worldwide with no resolution in sight.
