Addressing parliament, Takaichi remarked, "I do not believe economic or social activity should be halted at this point," responding to an opposition legislator’s inquiry regarding the necessity of introducing urgent economic interventions.
The near shutdown of the Strait of Hormuz, triggered by the US-Israel confrontation with Iran that commenced on Feb. 28, has compelled resource-dependent Asian countries, including Japan, to advocate for decreased fuel usage.
Japan remains heavily dependent on Middle Eastern nations for its crude oil supply.
Takaichi also noted that her administration is actively pursuing alternative sources to ensure stable oil procurement.
The country has already tapped into its emergency petroleum reserves on two occasions, with a third release planned for May 1.
At present, Takaichi indicated there is no immediate requirement for an additional budget, emphasizing that the government can utilize contingency funds within the existing budget framework if necessary to address developments related to the Middle East situation.
