Gauteng e-Government on 11 years of connecting Gauteng through technology

From connecting more than 1,200 government, healthcare and school sites to developing 59 e-Services and empowering more than 25,000 people, Gauteng’s digital transformation is changing the way government works and how residents access opportunities. As the Gauteng Department of e-Government marks 11 years, it is reflecting on a journey of using technology to build a more connected, accessible and digitally enabled province.

Since its establishment in 2015, the Department has played a key role in building the digital backbone of the Gauteng Provincial Government through the Gauteng Provincial Network (GPN). The network connects government facilities, healthcare facilities and schools, supporting the delivery of government services across the province.

The Department has also made significant progress in digital service delivery, with more than 59 e-Services developed through the Gauteng Digital Platform. These services are helping make government services faster, more accessible and convenient for residents, while reducing reliance on paper-based processes.

Digital skills development remains another key focus. More than 25,000 people have been empowered through digital skills programmes, youth technology initiatives and innovation programmes. The Department has also supported more than 400 ICT entrepreneurs, helping create opportunities for businesses to participate in the growing digital economy.

Technology is also being used to support safer communities across Gauteng. The Department has deployed more than 300 CCTV cameras, while more than 7,200 CCTV feeds are accessed to support safety and security efforts. The e-Panic Button has recorded more than 180,000 downloads, giving residents another technology-based tool to seek assistance during emergencies.

The Department’s work is further supported by strong organisational performance, with 99% budget performance and 84% of strategic targets achieved. This is alongside continued efforts to strengthen cybersecurity governance and drive digital transformation across the provincial government.

Gauteng MEC for e-Government, Bonginkosi Dhlamini, said the anniversary is not only about celebrating the Department’s achievements, but also about looking at how technology can continue to improve the lives of residents.

“For 11 years, e-Government has been building the digital backbone that keeps Gauteng connected. We have made significant progress, but our work is not done. Our focus must remain on using technology to improve service delivery, create opportunities and make government more accessible to our people.”

MEC Dhlamini said the Department will continue to invest in digital skills, innovation, connectivity and digital services to ensure that communities benefit from the opportunities created by technology.

“We want a Gauteng where technology works for everyone. Whether it is a young person gaining digital skills, an entrepreneur growing their business, a resident accessing a government service online or a community benefiting from technology that supports safety, our goal is to make a real difference in people’s lives.”

As the Department enters its next chapter, it will continue working with government departments, municipalities, the private sector, communities and other partners to strengthen Gauteng’s digital economy and improve the way government delivers services.

The 11-year milestone represents 11 years of purpose, 11 years of progress and 11 years of possibility as Gauteng continues building a smarter, safer and more connected province.
