Governor McKee Statement on RIPTA Transit Center

Published on Thursday, August 20, 2026

I heartily support today’s vote by the RIPTA Board of Directors to begin design and engineering work on a relocated bus hub that will maximize access to multimodal transportation.

My administration partnered with RIPTA to move forward with relocating the transit hub out of Kennedy Plaza and building a modern, safe, state-of-the-art facility next to the Providence train station. The new hub will help grow ridership and create new opportunities for RIPTA’s future.

This new bus hub will be one of the state’s largest investments in public transportation infrastructure in recent history.

My administration has worked hand in hand with RIPTA to ensure that more than $17 million from the 2014 transit bond is dedicated to this important project.

I have also advocated for federal funding with both the Rhode Island congressional delegation and the U.S. Department of Transportation, an effort that has yielded a $25 million federal BUILD grant to support the bus hub project.
